Solvent-Assisted Adsorption of Cellulose on a Carbon Catalyst as a Pretreatment Method for Hydrolysis to Glucose

چکیده

Cellulose hydrolysis to glucose using a heterogeneous catalyst is necessary step in producing bio-based chemicals and polymers. The requirement for energy-intensive pretreatments, such as ball milling, increase the reactivity of cellulose one major issues this area. Here, we show that by solvent-assisted adsorption pretreatment step, can be adsorbed on surface carbon catalyst. For pretreatment, phosphoric acid (H3PO4) performed better than other solvents sulfuric (H2SO4), tetrabutylammonium fluoride/dimethyl sulfoxide (TBAF/DMSO) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMMI]Cl). Hydrolysis after removal H3PO4 produced 73% yield glucose. Partial before increased final yield. was proportional number weakly acidic functional groups catalyst, indicating reaction heterogeneously catalyzed. In preliminary lab-scale life-cycle analysis (LCA), greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per kg through were calculated. H3PO4-assisted notably reduces GHG compared previously reported milling pretreatment.

Enhancing Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Cellulose by Ultrasonic Pretreatment

Slurries of rice-straw cellulose (obtained by delignification and removal of hemicelluloses from the powdered raw material) were subjected to ultrasonic waves at different intensities for various times (constant temperature). Susceptibility of the samples to cellulose-hydrolysis increased initially with pretreatment time, reaching a maximum or a constant level thereafter. Maximum glucose yi...

Glucose production from hydrolysis of cellulose over a novel silica catalyst under hydrothermal conditions.

A novel silica catalyst was synthesized by evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method and tested for the catalytic selective hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose. This silica catalyst exhibited a higher catalytic activity than other oxides prepared by the same method, such as ZrO2, TiO2, and Al2O3. Using silica as a catalyst, cellulose was selectively hydrolyzed into glucose with a glucose y...

Microwave-assisted solvent-free acetylation of cellulose with acetic anhydride in the presence of iodine as a catalyst.

In this work an optimization of the solvent-free acetylation of cellulose with acetic anhydride under microwave heating with iodine as a catalyst was performed. The optimized parameters included the microwave irradiation power from 300 W to 800 W, the reaction time between 5 to 40 min, the reaction temperature from 80 to 130 degrees C, and the amount of iodine from 1 to 15 mol%. The extent of t...

A new route to improved glucose yields in cellulose hydrolysis

An unusual inverse temperature-dependent pathway was discovered for cellulose decrystallization in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). Cellulose was completely decrystallized by TFA at 0 °C in less than 2 hours, a result not achieved in 48 hours at 25°C in the same medium. The majority of TFA used in cellulose decrystallization was recycled via a vacuum process. A small remaining amount of TFA was dilu...
